It is not uncommon to hear (in an interpreting encounter) and see (in a written document for translation) the word “clinician.” Many people render this term as “doctor,” which is INCORRECT.
A “clinician” in the United States is a gender-neutral term that represents many potential healthcare providers in a clinical setting. These include, but are not limited to, a physician, physician assistant (PA), nurse practitioner (NP), registered nurse, dentist, optometrist or psychologist (therapist/counselor). Usually, it is synonymous with “healthcare provider” and “healthcare professional.” As always, if your are unsure, seek clarification from your client!
