Description: During this interview with physician Lucia Roncalli, the interpreter will learn about the delicate nature of medical exams for asylum seekers and the ways in which the interpreter can best support communication. Vicarious trauma and self-care, both during and following the encounter, are discussed. The corresponding glossary contains 25 terms. Lucia Roncalli is a licensed and board certified physician who specializes in trauma research and education. She earned her MPH in Health and Human Rights and Health in Crisis from Johns Hopkins.
Goals:
  1. To understand the communication goals and needs of the medical provider when conducting a medical exam with asylum seekers.
  2. To identify strategies for self-care in which the interpreter can engage both during or outside the asylee medical exam encounter.
  3. To learn specialized medical terminology related to asylee medical exams.
